The 10th edition of the Canal D’or awards took place on Saturday 28th at Yaounde congress hall hosted by Tchop Tchop , Kelly White and veteran TV host Pascal Pierre. The award ceremony was characterised with pomp and Splendour in the presence of the first lady Chantal Biya and under the patronage of the minister of communication Tshiroma Bakary.

A flamboyant red carpet moment added the jazzy nature of the event. Stanley Enow was the headliner of the prestigious event should I say Cameroon’s Grammy.  The MTV award-winning rapper bagged home 2 awards. Quite historic. The most dramatic moment was when Pascal Pierre openly made a marriage proposal to Jambo TV host Kelly White. She later declared in a post-event interview that it wasn’t a “just for fun” proposal but real .

Special awards went to Soukouss Makoul,  Aladji Toure, Roland Kamseu and Eko Roosevelt for their outstanding contribution in the music culture.

It was quite a gloomy day for fellow English speaking nominees who were abortive . Their reactions coupled with fan reactions on social media were quite exasperating . However, the results remain unchanged.

Below is the full list of winners of this year’s Canal D’or.

The eye-catching Red carpet moment that kicked-off the ceremony spotlighted Cameroonian celebrities in all spheres of entertainment clad in sparkles. Ground-breaking performances  that night by the traditional dance group ‘Tic Akam’, Govinal Essomba, Stanley Enow, Leadsman, Espo 2 Benz electrified the ceremony. Finally, it was a breath-taking night on national television.

An appraisal of what the normal eyes could not see

1. About 30 minutes to the official start of the Award ceremony, a meticulously selected playlist of Nigerian and American videos were shown on  screen to entertain the audience.

2. Frequent technical hitches of image display (Screen black-outs) when categories of nominees were announced .

3. The omission of the category for Best Male Actor went unnoticed by the organisers. Nominees in that category who stormed the ceremony expensively and elegantly-clad had a wave of shock run through their nerves as the ceremony ended without a winner announced.

4. The Award for Best TV presenter was handed to Thierry Ngongang of ‘Carte Sur Table’ on STV on set and later changed in favour of  Charles Ebune of ‘Global Watch’ on CRTV.

5. Otia Vitalis was nominated in the category for Best supporting Actor of the year and was appointed by the organisers to present the same award to the winner Alenne Menget.

6. It was evident that most nominees were not informed about their nomination for the award . This explains why majority of the winners were not present.

Highly emotional moments

Photo

1. A large standing ovation was given to Ben Decca when he clinched the award for Best Artist of All time and emotionally stated that he was immensely elated to be recognized for the very first time in his country.

2. Govinal Essomba hasn’t lost his steam yet.The Bikutsi powerhouse thrilled the audience with energetic dance moves  during an ebullient rendition of his classic  tune ”Naya Naya ”.

3. The man of the year was ‘Hein pere’ hit-maker Stanley Enow who bagged  two awards. He paid tribute to the other nominees in Artist of the year category for being bigger and better , considering himself just a beginner.

Elegant and handsome Libota Macdonald has starred in movies like ‘Cluster’ and ‘Nexus’ produced by Musing Derrick. NexDim met with the popular Bamenda-based movie-star at Necla Hotel -Bamenda for an exclusive interview about his career and prospects.

NEXDIM: Hello Macdonald.

Libota : Hi NexDim

NEXDIM: Can you introduce yourself.

I’m Libota Macdonald, an actor, I live in Bamenda. I have been the movie industry for 4 years.

NEXDIM:When did you start and what has been your achievements in the movie industry?

Libota :My debut was in the movie titled ‘Bikata’ about 4 years ago . I am so proud of the fact that I was the first ever Cameroonian to be nominated for Best Upcoming Actor at the ZAFAA . I have had the opportunity to be part of projects in Burkina Faso. I also clinched a nomination at the AMAA in Nigeria.

NEXDIM:Why have you been absent from the movie scene?

Libota :I decided to pull back in a bid to learn more acting techniques from others with greater experience. I’ve been reading and doing a lot of online research to fine-tune my talent. Actually working hard to become the superstar am destined to be. I’ll bring a different personality.

NEXDIM: Who do you admire in the movie industry in Cameroon?

Libota :I admire Epule Jeffery , Lino Lovert, Yijika Solange and Queen .They are very talented.

NEXDIM:How can you rate the Cameroon Film industry?

Libota :I am a positive thinker despite the huddles we face in the industry. To me, we are at 45%. There’s a lot of work to be done .

NEXDIM: What’s your plan for the future?

Libota :I want to be an actor the rest of my life and I love what I’m doing. I’ll be featuring in future movies in Cameroon .

NEXDIM: What’s your dress code?

Libota :Simple but stylish.

NEXDIM: What’s your impression about the music industry?

Libota :I think we are really doing fine but the major problem is that Cameroonians rather consume foreign music and fail to consume what belongs to them. Artists should also concert to bring out ideas on how the industry can forge ahead .What they need is robust promotion.

NEXDIM: Are you married?

Libota :I’m not married. I think marriage is not an achievement. It’s better to have children rather than being married. Anyway, let me not talk about that.

NEXDIM: What’s your fave meal?

Libota :Garri and okro.

NEXDIM: It was nice having you.

Libota :Thanks and great job. Thanks for the opportunity.Thumps up and God bless you .Lemme go drink my beer please.
