Cameroonian music just like African music is good rich thrilling music yet it’s exportation is dogged by many things. One of those things preventing Cameroonian music from reaching far-off frontiers is ,unfortunately, the length. Some of them  are as long as 8 minutes. Please hold it right there before you utter this enormity “Were Toto Guillaume and  Ange Ebogo songs not embraced despite their length”. If that’s the only bullet in your barrel then  grow up because tastes and trends have changed considerably . R’n'B and rock have nothing on “Makossa” and “Mbagheuleum’ but they have stealthily became world music because their  lengths tie with what media outlets allocate. We live in a world where time is a precious resource and if our musicians must get the airplay needed to popularise  their music widely they must tailor them to the world trend which is about 3-4 minutes max for a song. In a world where we do not control mainstream media we have to bow to these unwritten rules else our music will never go beyond some thresholds. Even Cameroonian D.Js  will confess to you that some of the songs aren’t played fully because they are too damn long and time isn’t free at any station. The world yearns for Cameroonian and African music but in the 21st century people can’t spare one whole day listening to one song. Diaspora- Cameroonian musicians have learnt the lesson but some home-based one’s have refused to listen. Isn’t it cost-wise for Rabba-Rabbi to take 7 minutes and record two songs than one. Feel free to disagree. One thing we all have a right to is an opinion.

According to media reports, former Canon and Sedan man Marcus Mokake is on his way to Qatar club Al-Kharaitayah. After his contract with French- side Sedan ended last June, the 30 year old has been clubless. Pending the routine medical check, everything seems set for the combative Cameroonian to fly to Qatar. If the deal sails through this could be a good opportunity for the player to relaunch his career and why not earn more call-ups to the national team. Go Marcus.

Music remains one of the few areas where people are compelled to change their names in order to be more attractive. People find themselves buying the notoriety and fame of past legends by taking on similar names in order to make it to the top of the charts.While that results in pre-album release buzz and later commercial success for some,it is a problem for others especially when they had earlier presented themselves to the public and had been accepted as such.Given the very nature of the industry today,artists, whether upcoming or established,are brands polished and refurbished by their names. If upon stepping into the limelight one doesn’t settle the name issue,then there might be problems in the future when one desires changing this name for one reason or another.This is because when an artist hasn’t amassed sufficient fame and clout, he/she does’t have the licence of greats like Dirty Money formerly,Diddy,P.Diddy,Puff Daddy a.k.a Sean Combs to command the continued allegiance of fans by shuttling in and out of their favour with different names.An artist’s name brands him in the public’s eyes  and any change of name brings along a new challenge:that of convincing the public all over again as to what you represent and offer musically.A change of name can easily bruise a fledgling reputation.In my opinion, a case in point is Cameroonian singer Sine formerly Sidney.

He caught public attention in 2008 when he emerged winner of the T.V show Africa Star after wooing the jury and the tele-viewers  with his vocal range and  exquisite renditions of legendary classics like ‘I will always love”.One can imagine the public’s yearning for his album,and in music the public yearnings easily translates into commercial success.Then,imagine the number of fans,potential c.d and concert-ticket buyers,that will keep their money in their pockets because they don’t know Sydney has become Sine. Despite the great video,”Koh-koh” is  a mid-chart hit but might have shot straight to the top upon release if the public had been sufficiently informed that Sine was once Sydney:the crooner who  won the first edition of Africa star.

The Mboa Hip Hop Awards has been one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in Cameroon Hip Hop music scene, gathering all the buzz and hype on Canal 2 though revolving only around French-speaking Cameroon artists,  segregating English-speaking artists;  ”A French-speaking Cameroon thing”.

This year , a vehement promise was made by the organizers to get artists from the English-speaking part of the country utterly involved in the activities of this edition. Hopes got ignited and a feeling of belonging sparked off.  A sense of unity !

Fair enough, a derogatory category was nursed dubbed ”Best Anglophone Artist” having as nominees;  Zinnia, Adah, and Dr Sley . Apartheid ? I don’t know .

This act of segregation got several English-speaking artists and music pundits worried, feeling a foul air looming which urged them to air out sad sentiments on social networks  FACEBOOK and TWITTER:

STV 2 presenter, Tito Valery called on all not to vote anybody in that category and lamented why there isn’t a category for ”Best Francophone Artist”

Daddy Black, Steveslil and a plethora of English-speaking artists expressed sad feelings either. The humilation didn’t end there but extended to a putrid level of treatment experienced by the English-speaking nominees in Douala.

Reggae-soul sensation Dr Sley , who just arrived from UK , a nominee in that category made this remark on Facebook after making the trip to Douala for  the award ceremony;

” They told us of Akwa Palace as our hotel, but rather we went to one funny house not fit to call a hotel, without a tv working, bathing from a bucket, DIRTY BED SHIPS AND PILLOW CASE. as if its not enough, I DID NOT EVEN PERFORM. now I am asking WHY? Every single French artist was to pass on stage before any English artist. Then due to the boring nature of some of their artists, the show ended. Now I did not pick up award, I did not have a good sleep, I did not perform to my fans. Then why did they invite me. Even my transport they did not provide but every french artist was given something or was transported. Now, we are like strangers in our land. Well, we don’t need them to be up there. The work continues”

Another factor that marred this year’s Mboa Hip Hop Award was the voting procedure; Dr Sley speaks out;

”The first question I ask when I arrived, how come we are voting to a personal telephone number, what  if the person deletes some votes in favor to another person? They said, because the MTN Data base which they have could not hold all the votes. But my question is how many messages can a phone receive, not up to 150 messages. But i know i got atleast 500 votes. How could they manage it? So i knew its all fake. But i was left back to perform and till now i feel terrible for not singing to my people. I had a good message for them. well Jah took us back savely and i say thanks to all those who believed in me.

What then is the next step for artists from the English speaking part of Cameroon ?

However, here are the various award winners.
