Thank God for MTVBase.

Instead of watching Saturday afternoon poorly done  TV shows aiming at encouraging untidy, mediocre artists with no sense of… Read More

The Whassom’s is  a new Cameroonian group of two sisters , Shine and Sasha , 9 and 7 years old respectively. Their debut album ”Mes premiere pas” was released in June 2010 . Their style , massively influenced by R n B, Pop, and Rock n Roll communicates a message of love, charity, hope and revenge.

In ”Amour Impossible” ,  Sasha, the younger of the two budding artists (both pupils at St. Gerard Catholic School Deido, Douala), reveals her passion for a boy, a classmate of her older sister ;« T’étais en grande section et moi en petite J’étais la petite soeur » and  a love affair is impossible between them.
In the album, they equally pay tribute to  their beloved Aunt Sandra Richelle, who introduced them into music and  their grandmother to whom they dedicate the song “N’siani”, meaning : “We miss you.”

What’s up with Zinnia ?

Posted In: Gossip, NEWS by The Administrator

Zinnia Bemo is rated as one of the best singers of our generation in Cameroon , raised to fame after winning Mutzig Star 2009 .

She was part of  Kora Awards 2010 nominated group, Bright Phase and actively  participated in their sophomore  album ”Africa Abong” . Later,  she was part of the Nescafe African Revelation 2009 wining group, BAAM . Zinnia’s vocals and images have also been spotted  in all  recordings of the group, ”Check’ em” alongside Belle Asong, Mabel , and Adele of Baam.

The intriguing question here is ”Where does she belong ” ? Is she  solo , with Bright Phase , BAAM, or Check’em ?

More exasperating, after winning the prestigious Mutzig Star 2009 Peugeut 206 Sedan, fans have been running out of patience, waiting for her solo album to be released by Brasseries Du Cameroun as promised.

Will the album ever be released ?

I’m not done yet, I was watching the finals of GOSPEL MUSICAL on  CRTV last Sunday when I heard a song performed by one of the candidates called Leadsman titled ”Paddy man”. The young  singer from Bamenda claimed he composed the song.

Funny enough, this same song with some slight lyrical modifications was used by Zinnia to grab the Mutzig Star competition last year . It is rumoured that the song may feature in the GOSPEL MUSICAL forthcoming album to be released in December . Now, who is the true owner of the song ?

Watch out for an exclusive interview with Zinnia  on nexdimempire.com

Legend Corner: PRINCE NICO MBARGA

Posted In: Profile by The Administrator

Born to a Nigerian mother and a Cameroonian father on January 1st, 1950 in Abakaliki, Nigeria, Prince Nico embraced the musical traditions of both cultures. Prince Nico’s music was inspired by the five years he spent in Cameroon during the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960’s.
He played the xylophone, conga, drums, and electric guitar in school bands and he made his professional debut as a member of a hotel band, the Melody Orchestra, in 1970.
He formed his own group, Rocafil Jazz, after returning to Nigeria two years later and performed regularly at the Naza Hotel in Onitsha. In 1973, Nico and his group released a single which was met with little fanfare but their second single, “I No Go Marry My Papa,” became a regional hit.
The band’s inability to break past their regional following resulted in their recording contract being dropped by EMI. The band later signed with another label “Rogers All Stars”.
EMI had turned down the demo-tape of “Sweet Mother” in 1974, citing its childish appeal as reason. Prince Nico then headed for Decca, another recording giant, and was again rejected.
In December of 1976, Rogers All Stars, a recording company in Anambra State, recorded the album.
In 1976, Prince Nico and his band, Rocafil Jazz, released the biggest African hit ever, the classic “Sweet Mother” .
The album soon became a national anthem, largely because of its emphasis of motherhood and its brilliant fusion of Cameroonian, Nigerian, and Zairean styles (highlife and Congo music).
“Sweet Mother” sold over 13 million copies, was sung in Pidgin English and by the end of the 1970’s Prince Nico’s influence was going international and reshaping the music of some Ghanaian and Caribbean bands.
For the next six years, Prince Nico and Rocafil Jazz recorded nine albums.
In 1982, Prince Nico relocated to England where his act featured flamboyant, rock inspired performances.
He continued to appear with the Rocafil Jazz but also performed with London-based highlife band the Ivory Coasters and Cameroonian vocalist Louisiana Tilda.
When he returned to Nigeria he launched his own record label.
Prince Nico and the original members of Rocafil Jazz separated after several Cameroon-born members were deported.
He later formed the New Rocafil Jazz Band but he failed to match his early success.
He left music and turned his attention to managing the two hotels that he owned, Hotel Calabar and the Sweet Mother Hotel.
On 24 June 1997, a motorcycle accident silenced forever the voice of Prince Nico Mbarga of ‘Sweet Mother’ fame. Sweet Mother continues to be the most popular song amongst Nigerians, young and old.
