The Zambian referee Janny Sikazwe caused consternation, and triggered fury from Tunisian players and staff, by whistling for full time at the 86th minute.
The Zambian, who refereed two group-stage games at the 2018 World Cup in Russia ordered play to resume after protests, only to add more salt to the injury by whistling the farcical end of the match again before 90 minutes, with Mali leading 1-0.
As staff from Tunisia rushed towards the referee and pointed angrily at their watches, Sikazwe and his assistants were escorted off the pitch by stewards.
Tunisian officials have written to CAF asking for the match to be replayed.
