X MALEYA,THE PROLIFIC CAMEROONIAN TRIO

Filed Under (ARTISTS PROFILE, NEWS, hip hop) by The Administrator on 25-08-2009

xmaleyaIt is rare  today to  visit  any  snack-bar,nightclub,street, cyber cafe , watch tv,or listen to the radio without getting the new song from the prolific trio, X Maleya ”yelele” .The song is fast becoming the new cameroonian anthem. It is everywhere. It is in the Duala language ,of   which none of three young guys identify their origin that the group was christened. Maleya means advice and X means the  ”unknown”, the one who can give  advice to the rhythm of  makossa,  bikutsi, bensikin or assiko. ” In reality ,it is the diversity which characterizes the group and its various   members (Roger, Augustus and Hate). ”It is this fusion of our origins and of our cultural influence that inspired this name”

The trio includes two young Cameroonian  and one ”citizen of the world” whose adventure begins in 1998. First made up of two members  during their childhood in the  streets of  Biyem-Assi in Yaoundé. On their way, they met Hais Zaiter.  They realized that he had the same groove as them. Hais Zaiter is the  guitarist.  They startedmaleya interpreting songs and later started  composing their own melodies. Hans Mbong, promoter of the ”Association Axe Jeunes’‘ helped them stirrup  in the concept « les ca me dit rap”. The French cultural centre of Yaoundé was the ground for their very first show. The group is not only remarkable because of the presence of a white but also because of their stunning choreographies.

After the release of their new album, the group has been very busy with shows all over Africa.

WESTOXC,THE REVELATION OF HIP HOP IN K-TOWN

Filed Under (hip hop, star of the week) by The Administrator on 15-08-2009

westoxc-2 WESTOXC is an Afro-beat, Hip Hop trio based in Kumba. This prolific Hip Hop group has been creating an indelible foot-print in the hip hop music scene in the city of Kumba. NexDim had the opportunity of catching up with the group at their WESTOX RECORDS building opposite Kumba Main Market for an exclusive interview.

NexDim: How did the group Westoxc come about?

Westoxc:’’ The group started some years back in 2007 here in Kumba. Our first meeting was at an album launch. I met with Toxic and we decided work on our talents. West Don owned a computer at home and he build up a local home recording studio. We were all sticking around to produce demos. After having some freestyle shows at various locations, we thought it was right time to form a group. That was how WESTOX all started .WESTOX is just a merge of the first three characters of our names, WES and TOX. Clo later featured in the scene and was added as a new member of the group to make it WESTOXC. Clo is mostly at the background to give backup vocals because his style is too soft and soulful and we do the hard punch style.

westoxc-1NexDim: Tell us about your debut album

Westoxc: ‘’our debut album is yet to be released and it is dubbed ‘’Good morning Africa’’. The album speaks out about the rejuvenation or rebirth of the new dawn in Africa. It also depicts our pride and culture. The album is a commercial package that is meant to gratify the desire of music lovers. The general public should be anticipating a unique style’’

NexDim: how do you think you can capture the market and how is your music targeted.

Westoxc: ‘we follow African popular demands especially the kind of music that is now blazing a trail in the Cameroonian music market. What we notice is that Cameroonians appreciate and easily relate to music that hits the dance floor and entertains than music that is didactic or out to sensitize. So we just work in accordance with that trend of music and we think we could be accepted by the public’

cameroon-1031NexDim: How is the Hip Hop music scene in K-TOWN?

Westoxc: Hip Hop music is really evolving tremendously. The response was initially slow but gradually with advent of hip hop shows and radio programs like the one DJ WEST is hosting ‘’Street dreams” on Ocean City Radio, the public is beginning to gain some confidence and credibility in our local products. The media is therefore playing a valuable role in promoting the hip hop culture in Kumba. So far, sales of albums released have been good and we believe they can only get better and better’’.

NexDim: how do you think your music can penetrate with the massive influence of Nigerian music in the market?

family-008Westoxc:the Nigerian influence in our local Cameroonian music scene  does not pose any threat to us. It’s just a matter of being unique and that’s what we are. We are coming with a brand new style and we are just different from others. We sound different with our fuse of local Cameroonian dialects or languages and pidgin in our music. We bring a completely unique atmosphere. So with that we can fit in the market comfortably’’.

NexDim: What are the difficulties you face in the industry?

Westoxc: the major constrains we are facing is the getting executive producers or people of goodwill who know the business to invest in the hip hop music scene in Cameroon. We need such people to invest so that we can come out with quality products. I think if we had these investors, we would have been way too far than the Nigerians. One main plague we face is piracy.

family-0071

NexDim: so what have you devised to combat piracy?

Westoxc: basically, it’s been hard to fight piracy. What we think we will do is to ask these guys to sympathize with us making them understand how much we have put in to come out with the product. However that is at our own level but we think so far the SOCAM framework is doing great to eradicate this nightmare.

NexDim: Westox also owns a record label. What works have you done so far?

Westoxc:We have produced Ayi Rasta, Big G whose album has been great in the market, The ZHET,UF4,Evangelist Eunice and Noble DEE. Westox functions as an integral part of Ocean city radio and it is called Ocean City Studio 2.

front-2NexDim: What are your final words?

Westoxc:’’ we are crying out to people of goodwill to invest in the Cameroonian hip hop music industry to help develop the quality of production. And to upcoming artists, you guys should stop using your mirrors as your MTVs or your TRACE TV.Take your products out for shows and the media to get heard and make yourselves known’’’

range-african

NexDim:hey,how are you doing?

Range Roverrange-1:Fine.Thank you.

NexDim:Tell us Reprudencia, why are you called Range Rover ?

Range Rover:”I use the name Range Rover simply because  it’s my favorite car”.

NexDim: You hail from Cameroon. Tell us about your family and background.

Range Rover:”Yes, I am Cameroonian and I’m 100% proud.I was born in its Capital, Yaounde. About my family, I really do not mix family in my showbiz  life as they are  two different worlds you know”.

NexDim: what pushed you to leave Cameroon into Hollywood ?

Range Rover: ”I didn’t leave Cameroon to Hollywood. As you know, I have always been looked as Hollywood from Cameroon. But when I moved to the U.S.A, I went to the wrong place, Maryland where I lived for 2 years but I still followed my dreams. It was the wrong place because if I had left earlier, I know I would have been further but its all good God knows why”.

NexDim: How does it feel like attending film school in Hollywood ?

Range Rover:”My acting Career still stands but i switched (our secret ) to fashion design. I love acting and it is in my blood and at the same time I am fashion, I represent fashion like my “Bestie”, Rose will say”her dress code is too flashy for fashion’‘ . So after doing the film thing , you get to realize in NYFA, it’s mostly good for people who want to be film makers. I was taking classes at SMC but i switched to FDIM, a renowned fashion design school in Down town LA popularly known as Fashion District where I did two years and graduated with a clothing line and a degree. Hopefully celebs like me of course (LAUGHING) wearing my line. Hope I will design a shirt you will buy”
NexDim: Tell us about some recent things you have done in the industry.

range-2

Range Rover:

Hhmmmm!! my recent works have been Playboy Radio Talk Show which everyone misunderstood of course on Facebook. It is a talk show for girls. Especially those who have  a life related to show biz.I did a spot for BET which airs on and off, I did a show on MTV parental control, I also did Hollywood  Judge and I do a lot of runway shows and different bits n bites. I shot for Sexy Show Magazine (but still thinking if I wanna be in it),and right now we working on a reality tv show coming near you soon. I’m working on that with my friend ,Sofiya (she is an actress and a host..(secret) .

NexDim:I hear you live in a luxurious apartment and you party all the time, sure you must be making alot of money in Hollywood.

range-3

Range Rover: Wow! I didn’t know gossip goes that far oh. Well when you are good I guess people notice faster. Yes, I live a luxurious and extravagant life which I am cutting down  due to the recession in America. The family I did not want to talk about supports me a lot. I leave my luxury thanks to them because it ain’t easy going to school, pursuing Hollywood  then working. but I make some Good money from doing hair. That’s  my talent from GOD.
As for partying what else is there to do in Hollywood?parties start at 12 and end at 2 AM. I do not drink and i do not smoke so I have double energy to party every day.

NexDim:There is word in the streets that you dating an NBA player.

Range Rover:”Word!! hhmm!!the streets will kill me as they always have words. Well, I wouldn’t want to suspend this question. But hey I am close to an NBA player actually couple of them but one of them is my close friend,we text, phone, Facebook,Twitter etc every day. We just friends but I know it’s not the story out there even here in LA. It’s in a lot of lips from people we both know but it’s not true. We’re just kool and we’ll stay friends ,he’s a really good friend though, but people just mix things up. Plus, I am so single so I do not even know what they talking about I even saw it on some paparazzi shit and stuff..”
range-4 NexDim:Tell us about your affair with a Nigerian RnB artist who took you to lagos ?

Range Rover:Wow!! you’re knocking me down. Wait! are you paparazzi? and you live in Cameroon? where do you get all these stories? Wow! well, Yes I was seen in LAGOS and No No No ,no Rn B artist flew me in. C’mon I am a big girl .I went to 9ja for work, nothing else but I am close to some artist and we hung out while I was there, like we hang out when he comes here . So it’s nothing like I said in the interview with NBA  player. We’re just friends,he’s a total sweetheart, he sings very good and we keeping in industry friendly. I mean he might feature in my upcoming Song. So i need the friendship…dammn!! that was hot. I still feel the heat from those two questions..OOOppps!!!

NexDim:After studying out there do you plan to stay there or come to Africa and establish ?

Range Rover:You so didn’t ask me that question.I can’t wait to move to Africa. I love and miss it so bad. I’d almost given up on school and gone back if not for my mom …i can’t stand abroad..its boring to me.But my issue now is which country am i moving to?I’m seriously working on that.

NexDim: Tell us about some of your plans for Africa

Range Rover:my plans for AFRICA are huge as I always say I have a mission driven by a vision of a different version. When next we meet i will put it on the table for you hun…

NexDim: How do you cope with  friends, fans and haters ?.

Range Rover:”Good question. As for friends, I do not have a lot, Iuse to have tons when I was on the east coast but it turned out , they had to join my H club which is a better place for them. The girl I call my friend, you should know her Rose Fualem. She’s God sent to me. As for fans, I just love them and try to always answer their questions and understand them and for my haters I always know they’ re ready to serve disaster instead of desert so I am so not thinking about them but I still got love for them”.

NexDim:We hear you have alot of Hollywood celeb friends.

Range Rover:”Yes, i have a couple of them. we always need that extra touch and connections regardless”

range-5NexDim:From the way you dress we do not see you repping Africa.

Range Rover: ”I saw this coming  but it’s not all about what I wear. I breath Africa. My blood runs green, red, yellow and the star. As for repping Africa, i just had my 1st African outfit in 7years made. It’s gorgeous but very simple as I wanted to do something super simple for a start. It was made in 9ja(NIGERIA) and my sweetheart friend brought it over …thanks love…but I am investing in some really cute ones though”.

NexDim:Your last words.

Range Rover:”America is a dream killer to all my Cameroonian African brothers and sisters. If you follow your dreams and wanna live in mars, you will. Never give up. I never did and will never do regardless of how hard it is.
