Albeit the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT is denouncing the publications of L’Equipe about soliciting Paul Le Guen to renew his contract as coach of the Cameroon national team, the idea has been hugely criticized by many Cameroonians and some football analysts.

Watching   ”La nuit du sport” yesterday on STV, Frank Happi , a TV sports consultant commented that  ”if  Le Guen returns to Cameroon, he will loss the respect of many players. ”  Paul Le Guen left the Cameroon  national team worse than what he met. To me, Paul Le Guen should not even be an option, ”  he bawls.

According to Alain Wabo, former coach of the Junior Indomitable Lions ,  ”If I am the decision maker, I would not renew Paul Le Guen’s contract as coach of the Indomitable Lions. He cannot be the solution for Cameroon at the moment. I just returned from South Africa where I attended the World Cup. Paul Le Guen has shown he has no experience to lead the Cameroon national team. In 17 games he had 17 teams. However, we did not have time to hone the team”

Justin Mbombog, a football coach based in France, hit the same nail.  ”He has lost control of the situation”

Asked whether Le Guen would be an option? Mbombog adds:  ”Yes! But I do not prefer. He is a good coach but he has lost his touch. No player  respected Paul Le Guen”

The same opinion runs through the minds of many Cameroonian football lovers  all over the world. To some , renewing Le Guen’s contract will mean twisting the knife in the wound.

CAMEROUN : FEUX ET TIRS CROISES POUR UN CAPITAINE DECRIE , LE TRISTE HIVER DE SAMUEL ETO'O

When Paul Le Guen arrived in Cameroon on the 25th of July 2009 to sign his contract as coach of the national team, he had, seated on his side Samuel Eto’o who both traveled from Paris.

The problem of  ’captaincy” in the national team was recurrent.  The fact that Samuel Eto’o became the vice captain of the national team before  Geremi Njitap started changing the serene atmosphere of the national team. Hence, division ensued.

With his title of ”pichichi’‘ and the poor performance of Rigobert Song, power was shifted.

Paul Le Guen did not call, meet or speak with Rigobert Song. Rumors of change of captaincy  accumulated until the first friendly match against Austria. “Rigo”, the boss, heated the bench while Samuel Eto’o was the new captain.

“Before the game, the coach never said  ” Rigo  ” will no longer be captain” . Things started degenerating from there.

The Lions however qualified for the African Nations Cup and World Cup.

CAN Angola in January 2010 was a disaster.

For the  friendly match in Monaco on March 3, 2010 against Italy, Geremi and “Rigo” are were not invited. Within the group, part of the team did not appreciate this gesture. In the dressing room, some players expressed their discontentment.

Players who expressed their discontentment were targeted. Rumors of them being discarded from the team began  circulating.

We were several weeks before the start of the World Cup. Achille Emana became more uncomfortable.

Under pressure, Le Guen finally decided to invite Geremi and Rigobert, but indicates that he did not definitely count on them.

During international friendlies before the kick-off of the World Cup,  Paul Le Guen decided to give ten days vacation to Samuel Eto’o, while the Lions were on intensive training in Lienz, Austria. The atmosphere was full of serenity and well-being.

The Young and newly recruited players were happy, the old too. The Lions in this state however secured draws.
From the match against Portugal and the arrival of  Samuel Eto’o, a stale atmosphere was established in the den.

Less than 24 hours after the group arrived in Durban Cameroon, we perceived the absence of  ”the old lions” and of Achille Emana and Alex Song in the group. The evil was deep. Paul Le Guen did not care.

The result against Japan aggravated the situation.

Between the first two games, authorities spent time reconciling clans to ease tensions. These efforts were futile as some players hated others.

The rift between Eto’o and Alex Song was evident. Some players did not mingle with others. The Media also kept  putting undue pressure.

Paul Le Guen  finally lost control of his team which led to ”Mighty”  Cameroon’s debacle.

Cameroon lost millions and lost honour.

According to information relayed from L’Equipe, despite the humiliating performance of the Indomitable Lions at the World Cup, and catastrophic tenure of office of  Paul Le Guen since 29th July 2009, the president of FECAFOOT, Iya Mohammed has decided to solicit him to prolong his contract as coach of the National team to 2014. This information brings shock waves across Cameroon. It is surprising that Le Guen has been resurfaced regardless of the stale atmosphere which characterizes the  national team with the egocentric attitude of some players, and the incompetence attributed to him. Lothar Matthaus who was at the top of the list for this job has been discarded in reference of the Frenchman.

Why not get a local coach?

Some Cameroonians suggest that rather than spending fabulous sums of money to pay foreign coaches who do not measure up to expectation, FECAFOOT should go for a local coach. Some names have been cited here like Patrick Mboma, Francis Oman Biyik and Francis Towa.

The most mediatized event is the world ahead of the SuperBowl, US Presidential Elections and the MTV Music Awards is the FIFA World Cup.

This event has been marred by certain unsportsmanlike behaviour and forgery exhibited by some players in decisive matches to score goals.

This world cup is sadly the most controversial signifying a negative trend inherent in modern football.

Nowadays  players have discovered that they can with total impunity commit fraudulent acts to save their teams to victory.

To back track, the original “hand of god” occurred during the 1986 World Cup when Diego Maradona scored with his hand.

The 2010 qualifiers started with the double-hand of god of Thierry Henry against Ireland which enabled them to qualify for the World Cup only to experience their worst performance in World Cup history. There is truly a just God!!

FABIANO’S hand of god.

Fabiano‘s  handball helped him to score his most beautiful goal in his career against Ivory Coast which saw Brazil lead by  3-1. He later admitted that he committed the foul.

The Ivory Coast defender Kolo Touré felt Fabiano’s debatable goal was crucial in the context of the game and criticised the referee , Lannoy. “The referee asked the player if he had touched the ball. How can a referee ask a player if he committed a foul?” Touré said.

Luis Fabiano, left, in the build-up to his second goal for Brazil against Ivory Coast

The new hand of God,  SUAREZ

The most criticized act of fraudulence was perpetuated by Suarez when Ghana played Uruguay at the Quarter Finals. The ball was already getting in when Suarez intentionally blocked it with his hands.

He prevented a goal, but was given a red card a penalty kick awarded to Ghana (who failed to capitalize).

There are two schools of thought on this play.  First being that he is a cheater and an embarrassment to the game deserving of a harsher penalty.  The second school of thought was he had to do whatever he had to.  Take a calculated risk to prevent a sure goal, and hope Ghana wouldn’t score.  It turns out his risk worked out for his team. Regardless, I feel his excessive celebration (a sigh of relief and a hug or two would have been sufficient), his extreme pride in that play, and being carried off like a hero was classless and disgusting.

The Cameroonian community in Capetown, South Africa has been in serious crisis since the 24th of June when Cameroon lost to Holland 2-1. The center of discussion is the 2 million CFA and 61 tickets that was given to the president of the Cameroonian community , Ashu Lucas for the support of the Indomitable Lions and celebrations in case of victory. He is blamed for the violence that ensued in Capetown that night which left many wounded and mass destruction in a club belonging to a Cameroonian; Lotin Ebai.

According to information gathered from other units and within the Cameroonian community in Cape Town, the acts of violence recorded in the night of Thursday 24 to Friday, June 25 between the Night Club are the result of  the President of the Community Ashu Lucas and his collaborators Epie Ivo EPAM and Esther Kunya not  being transparent in the management of money given to the Cameroonians in Cape Town by the Cameroon government.

“From the start, when they receive this money and tickets, they did not tell  anyone. They did not give us the tickets at the stadium, they said they will present 61 priority to the presidents of associations in each area. It is when we went to the authorities that they told us that they have given this money to our leaders.  Lucas Ashu admitting in embarrassment, told us that his followers have decided that this money will be used for food and drink from community members after the game in the nightclub of his younger brother Lotin Ebai. We accepted anyway. But when we arrived in the night club, we were informed that food and drink are to be sold. Asked about the 35,000 rand received from the government, Lucas Ashu said nothing good. We asked him to provide money for sharing as it was not used to buy food and drink. He started resisting as everyone revolted and there was  violence, ” explained the a Cameroonian.
Many of these Cameroonians portray that  their fear of the mismanagement of funds by Lucas Ashu and his collaborators  is based on deeds recorded in the past. On several occasions, they argue, Ashu Lucas and his cronies have not accurately reported the management of funds raised for the funeral of any fellow Cameroonian who is killed in Cape Town and for rejoicings on national holidays in Cameroon. Regarding the 35,000 rand given by the Cameroonian government Thursday, June 24, Cameroonians in Cape Town are determined to bring Lucas Ashu to share the fairly.

“We’ll have that Cameroonians in Cape Town also believe that the damage caused in the nightclub Lotin Ebai must be repaired by this money,” says Lucas Ashu .

Paul Le Guen has decided to quit his function as coach of the Indomitable Lions after the futile mission in South Africa. His tenure of office as coach has been catastrophic marred by many defeats. He however helped the Lions to qualify for the 2010 African Nations and the World Cup.

“Avec trois défaites, c’est forcément un constat d’échec. Il aurait fallu que le groupe soit plus uni, il aurait fallu que ça prenne différemment, je n’ai pas réussi à faire en sorte que ça soit le cas”- Paul Le Guen

“On quitte ce Mondial avec beaucoup de regrets, on sait qu’on portait beaucoup d’espoirs, de tous les Camerounais, mais on n’a pas réussi à les concrétiser.”

There are several names attributed to this ; Jabu, otomokwo, boloh, marabou, black magic and more.
The Cameroon delegation had 12 fetish men to ensure that Cameroon qualifies for the Semi Finals of the World Cup.
God did not allow this to happen. When Cameroonians are pining in abject pernury, this is how the state budget is squandered.
The misadventures of the marabous expected to bring success and happiness to the Indomitable Lions for the 19th World Cup football began after the defeat against Denmark. Since some hope was still possible after thawing against Japan, they were not worried.

After the defeat of the Lions against Denmark, the marabous were sent to pack their bags and prepare to leave Durban immediately.

We recall that a great public blessing ceremony was held in Yaounde for the Indomitable Lions bring home the trophy in the capital of Cameroon on the evening of July 11. Patriarchs, clergymen and other traditional practitioners had participated alongside the farewell match that took place on June 8th .
You cannot merge darkness and light.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon who had already lost hopes of qualification to the next round of 16 yesterday played against The Netherlands who had already qualified top of group B:This match was very expedient for the Lions to maintain their honour, pride and dignity as a football powerhouse in Africa but this bid ended in jeopardy as they lost to Holland by 2-1 finishing last in the pool with 0 point. This is the first time in the history of the World cup the team is backing home with no point.
The Indomitable Lions have never before lost their first game and has never been eliminated after two games. The Lions of 1994 were better than this year.
The Cameroon team had a good possesion of the ball and tactically up to task but failed to make the difference as the defence still remained a major problem.
Emana and Webo who were massively criticised during the game against Denmark were out of the pitch.
Alex Song who played against Denmark was absent during this match due to medical reasons according to the coach. He was substituted by Chedjou.
This young player had not featured in this team since the African Cup of Nations in Angola in January. Chedjou made a good start with a shot on target that was picked up by the Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenburg and made valuable moves in the mid field.

In the nineteenth minute, Robin Van Persie, gets an opportunity after a poor placement of the Cameroon defense. Another attempt by Rafael Van Der Vaart was stopped by the Cameroon goalkeeper in the 25th minute. Less brilliant during the last match, Makoun was very active near the penalty area and enterprising too.

Van Persie, not well marked by the Cameroon defence opened the scoring in the 36th, a kick of the ball that journeys between the legs of Soulemanou.

Paul Le Guen leaves his reservation to the 56th minute. Abubakar Vincent replaced Gaetan Bong. The entry of young Coton Sport player restored freshness in the offensive compartment.
After a free kick by Njitap which led to a handball, a penalty was accorded , transformed by Samuel Eto’o making it 1-1.
The nightmare came at the 83rd minute. Aryan Robben launched a shot which hit the right post for a rebounce that enabled Klaas Jan Huntelar to score the second goal for his team.

IS LE GUEN THE BLAME?

Mohamadou Idrissou, indomitable Lions striker, the darling of the French coach had this to say;

“I’m here to tell the truth because we have not come here to walk around. There are some who think we’re here for a holiday. People were wrong. We made all the necessary preparation for the World cup but at no time did we have permanent starting team to play the World Cup. All the teams we have faced have a permanent starting squad. We played friendly matches with different players. We arrived in South Africa and this continued. Two days before the first game, the coach could not find a team that should start.
Two hours to the game, he calls us to communicate the starting 11. A starting 11 who have not even played together during training… Every two days, we have the meetings, the minister breaks our heads. We’re not here for politics, it is football.

Achille Emana, the Lions midfielder was left on the bench for the match against Holland talks against le Guen.

“We are the only team that has in three games used twenty players . We can not build a team with kids. If you look at Holland, they were qualified but kept the same team for the third game. I can not go with Paul Le Guen as coach of the Lions because I can not enter a team where a coach substitutes you without telling you why, without looking at you in the face and giving you an explanation. The same rigor that he brought to the beginning, we did not feel afterwards. I think the whole problem started at the African Cup where we played with 21 players … It is easy to blame the players. It has been four friendly matches, we have not won a single because it was not the same team. ”

Eto’o protects Le Guen

Faced with criticism Captain Samuel Eto’o protects his coach:
“We are all responsible. It would be easy to say that the fault lies with the coach. I think the players are equally responsible as well as the coach. We are all in the same boat. Do not look for scapegoats, even if it’s easier to blame a coach than the twenty three players. Paul has done good things, maybe if he had not come we would not even be in the World Cup, think about it and not put the blame on one person. I enjoyed working with him “.

The Cameroon expedition in South Africa has finally been terminated by Denmark. The Danish beat Cameroon by 2 goals to 1.

Here is my evaluation of the game and the players.

Goalkeeper

Souleymanou did not do bad at all but I blame him for not being vigilant and aggressive to stop the first goal. He is credited for having stopped a ‘face a face’ move that would have sealed the fate of the Indomitable Lions.

Defense

If he was man of the match against Japan, Assou-Ekotto is now guilty of poor marking which led to the opener by Bentner. All the 2 goals came from the area he has to cover.

Right, Stephane Mbia was very present in both the defensive and the offensive side.

The central defense was not more convincing than against the Japanese, the positioning errors and deficiencies in air duels were evident.

midfield

This is the compartment that was  reinforced with Three new players . Some did not not meet expectation. The case of Achille Emana is a perfect example. Repositioned to his preferred position,he was  slower and less powerful, he was not decisive at the right time, sometimes failing to shoulder his responsibilities to make the difference against the keeper. He missed several goal opportunities infront of the keeper.
On the right side, Geremi delivered an  average game, with a tendency of  wanting to build the game from the wing. He gave good crosses from his end.

Jean Makoun‘s poor defense tactics  in assisting Assou-Ekotto brought into the attack. Makoun was  powerless against Dennis Rommedhal which led to a goal.

Alexandre Song committed a few errors at the midfield. His start was slow, but he came into the game over the minutes.

Eyong Enoh second’s game was still not convincing. He always loses balls to the opponent and misses his duels.

Attack

Samuel Eto’o was well positioned and made the difference with a goal after a pass from Achille Webo .His vivacity was good but Webo was presnt only in the move that led to Eto’os goal.

Abubakar Vincent like an inexperienced player from Coton Sport dared but did not succeed. He was however courageous enough. He surely has a brilliant future with the team.

Idrissou has not really had the impact I expected. He lacks technique, his delivery is poor and he makes no difference. He is simply a minus.
