Zachary and Spaco : Taking Cameroonian comedy to greater heights

Cameroon has always been renown for producing prolific comedians like Jean Miche Kankan, Tchop Tchop , Man no lap, Fingon Tralala, Tagne, Oga, Eza Boto etc . Zachary and Spaco are equally Cameroonian comedians based in Kumba who are making frantic efforts to add value to the comedy industry. Their comedy has enabled them establish themselves as one of Cameroon’s finest entertainers having several CD releases to their credit. The duo just dropped a single titled ”Helele” and a comedy episode titled ”Primary school days” . Makossa artist, Frank Bebe features as School teacher in ”Primary school days”. NexDim shall bring to you an exclusive interview with Zachary and Spaco in the days ahead.

NexDim was present at the Cameroon Actor’s Guild cocktail at Hotel Residence Carlos on Sunday 20th 2011. We interviewed young Cameroonian actress , Visas Mabel.

Hi Mabel. How are you ?

Mabel: Fine. Thank you.

Briefly introduce yourself ?

Visas Mabel is a 22-year-old actress . I hail from Babanki/Bali, North West Cameroon. I come from a large family and our great garnd father had the wisdom to call his children VISAS, thus our lovely family name. I am a product of the University of Buea , studied Banking and Finance and presently enrolled at the Institute of Management andd Financial Accounting (IMFA).

Why did you indulge into acting as a career?

Mabel:My talent is God’s gift to me and I don’t intend to take it and bury into the ground .My love and passion for acting frist, sent me into the film industry. Many Cameroonians (including myself a few years ago) laugh at the Cameroon Film Industry because it’s not yet up to the standard of Nollywood, and right now CFI is still making their share of mistakes.I took the bold step to get in and be laughed at as well so as to give in my own little contribution to make the Cameroon Film Industry grow, and become an industry to be envied , not mocked at. I love acting , scriptwriting with a passion .

What have you achieved of far as an actress ?

Mabel:I have done two full length movies in Cameroon ”Vanity Fair” produced by Nina Ngassa, directed by Neba Lawrence and also featured in ”Unspoken” produced by Stella Damasus, written and directed by Daniel Ademinokan, still in post-production in Nigeria. I have equally acted a short movie on cancer in Douala produced by Stella Damasus.

What are the challenges you face in the emerging industry?

Mabel:The industry is not supported by Cameroonians as such and not recognised as well.This gets to affect actors. The industry does not get enough (if any) media attention at home, and this affects us the actors as well. Funding is low, exploitation is high and actors are so poorly paid, it is a demotivation. No one wants to commit full time to something which wouldn’t pay their bills. Apart from this, it’s fun all the way. It may be difficult at times but the difficult times are almost over.

What are your dreams?

Mabel:I dream everyday, I dream of being a sensation in the movie industry in Cameroon. I dream of being a house-hold name at home, I dream of pursuing acting as fukll time career, I dream of being internationally recognised , I dream of having my talent recognised and appreciated, I dream at night … I dream during the day… everyday . I dream to become a producer and scriptwriter as well.

Who is your role model ?

Mabel:I admire a lot of people . I’ve alwyas loved Uche Jombo ; her style, her uniqueness, her talent and her self-confidence. I would very much love to be like her one day, and even meet her. Who knows ? I’m always in awe when watching Mercy Johnson because I’ve not seem greater talent. I love her dynamism and the herat-felt way. She does her movies like her life depended on it. I love Stella Damasus for the inspiration and hope she gives me and other Cameroonian actors. I love her committment to help the CFI to gow. Finally , I think my role model is Queen Latifah. Her style is unique, her confidnce is something else and talent is special. I just love to watch her do her thing and I wish to be like her one day or even meet her . Who knows?

Who have you collaborated with so far ?

Mabel:Aside Stella Damasus and DANIEL from Nigeria, I’ve collaborated with lots of Cameroonian talents like Eka Christa (Not My Will, Unspoken Deceit), Casandra Chambo, Epule Jeffrey, Muma Pascal (Uncle Bob) in Vanity Fair, Prince Michael Enobi (Deceit, The Company etc) , Eleanor Visas (Unsoken, Obsession), Veye Lynette and Ngassa Nina.

As a formidable boost to the Cameroon Film Industry, an actors guild has been established . Can you throw more light on that ?

Mabel:The Cameroon Actors Guild (CAMAG) is a branch under the umbrella of the CFI. CAMAG was created in Tiko and has branches in some regions of Cameroon. The purpose is to bring all Cameroonian actors together under the umbrella of CFI and equally protect the rights of actors from exploitative producers and directors. As a means of bringing people , it holds weekly at Holywood snack bar resto, Bonduma. They also have monthy red-carpet celebrity cocktails involving musicians and stakeholders in the entertainment industry.

What do you think are the good ethics an actor should practice ?

Mabel:Be respectful. It’s unethical for an actor to be disrespectful to his producer or director on or off set. It’s unethical to sleep with his/her producer to get a role in a movie. It is unethical for an actor to start a job and steps down for some reason . There should be mutual respect amongst entertainers. Humility is what actors should possess in overwhelming quantities.

Mabel:Fufu corn and khati-khati

Last words to up and coming actors like you.

Mabel:It’s never easy. It’s never over till it’s over and evn then, it’s still not over. No matter how hard it is from the start , don’t give up. Keep struggling , keep climbing till you get there. There is always space at the top so keep going up, pursue your dream, tell yourself ” I can do this” and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Shoot for the moon , if you don’t reach there, you’ll land amongst the stars. Goodluck and LOL.

Cameroonian Film Industry – Heavyweight ,Charles Nyatte bows out

The Cameroonian performing arts family has lost a titan.Charles Nyatte , star of the popular CRTV soap “Japhet et Ginette”, has left the stage for good. He died on November 15,2011 after a malaise.The veteran actor was in Yaounde to begin shooting another soap .After starting his brilliant acting career with the creation of a theatre troupe in 1969,the soft-spoken artist amassed a string of starring roles in films.Acclamation and recognition finally accrued in the popular 90′s soap”Japhet and Ginette” when he became a household name in Cameroon.

ENOBI PRINCE-MICHAEL – Emerging Cameroonian filmmaker .

ENOBI PRINCE-MICHAEL, is one of Cameroon’s young multi-talented script-writer ,filmmaker and artist . He was born on the 19 of April 1992. Prince hails from the South-West Region of Cameroon and resident in Buea. He attended primary school in Nguti and Secondary and high school at Bishop Rogan College and currently a journalism and Mass Communication student of the University of Buea, and a diploma student in Management/Marketing. He is the only boy and second born in a family of five of Commissioner of Police Enobi Joseph-Ngwese and Mrs. Christansia Enobi.

”I started singing while I was in form one, when I joined the accapella group of my college(Bishop Rogan College), then by form four I switched to rap because most of my friends were into it an because I loved it. Then by the time I got to high school i started RnB and now I rep both fields”.

Prince is a young prolific writer, actor and Producer in the Cameroon Film Industry (C.F.I). He is one of the founding members and P.R.O of SPRINGBOARD PRODUCTIONS, one of the best film production houses in the country. He is the C.E.O and one of the founding members of BENCHMARK AFRICA another emerging production house in the South West region.

Prince-Michael ENOBI is an award winner of BEST-ACTOR of a short film, and to his records his film DECEIT emerged BEST SHORT FILM in the Fine Country African Film Festival held recently in Dschang Cameroon. He is the script and screenplay writer of the movie DECEIT. Other scripts in his collection not yet consumed include ‘BANDE DE TREIZE’, STRANGERS, ‘ROYAL RUMBLE’ and the horror movie ‘The Re-Awakening’, just to name a few. He has been an actor in the C.F.I since 2006, with films such as ‘THE COMPANY’ and ‘PREJUDICIAL FAME’ etc accredited to him. He is into music as a singer, music video director and producer. He is host for several events and shows with one being ‘FRIDAY NIGHTS OUT’ coming up soon. A reporter for Chariot FM(93.5), Chariot Newspaper, Divine Mercy Radio and Television Service(DMRTVS), The Herald Magazine of Bishop Rogan College, a resource person for Varsity Vibes Magazine University of Buea.

Ariane Astrid Atodji, Cameroonian film maker brandishes Cameroon high

Ariane Astrid Atodji is a Cameroonian film maker we have not featured here before on your number 1 Entertainment platform. She has been outstanding in the film industry earning her several awards, making Cameroon proud .

Born in Nguelemendouka in 1980 , Ariane grew up in Cameroon and attended film workshops at the Goethe Institute in Yaoundé before studying at the LN International Film School of Yaoundé. At the Cinema du Réel she was able to produce and present Koundi and National Thursday. “There is no funding in Cameroon. I was very fortunate to find funding from the Goethe-Institut Kamerun. The question is what can the documentary bring to the Cameroonian society? “There is not a documentary film culture in Cameroon” says Ariane. “People are more interested in fiction. When making the film I had the non-Cameroonian public in mind, who are familiar with the documentary genre. Not only are there no longer cinema houses in Cameroon, but there is not an audience either, because people are not interested. They say: What is it, this documentary? What are we to make of it? Honestly, the idea of showing this film in theaters in Cameroon never occurred to me.”

Her film titled ‘Koundi et le jeudi national” ,was an honor to Cameroon in December 2010 when it won a special prize from the jury at the Dubai National Festival, in April 2011 at the 33rd Festival International des films documentaries held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and in March 2011 , it was the Best long Documentary at the AMAA that held in Yengoua , Nigeria. Unfortunately she was unavoidably absent in Nigeria ,and was represented by another Cameroonian film director , Regis Talla . She was equally welcomed to Dortmund for the presentation of this film.

Nchifor Valery clinches Zafaa Award in London

Hey people, your votes thrived for Cameroonian actor, Nchifor Valery . He won the prestigious award of Best upcoming male in this year’s Zafaa Awards 2011 that took place on October 21st 2011 at Troxy Hall, London. He played a lead role in the movie dubbed ‘Obsession’, directed and produced by Achille Brice. Kudos !

NexDim Movies: Final session of auditions

Hello Nex Dim movie fans, hoping you all still got a very fresh memory of the movie auditions announced some weeks past, Nexdim Entertainment is glad to inform you that the auditions finally came and passed very successfully.
The 3 hours 30minutes event which kicked off from 3:00pm actually took place on Saturday, the 24th of this month at HAFCAMS opposite Da Crown Molyko Buea. Interestingly, 21 lucky contestants were pre-selected amongst whom are 10 boys.
Pre-selection because these 21 contestants will be contacted come Wednesday, the 28th of this month for another organized session of auditioning to take place on Saturday the 1st of October 2011, where the final cast for the movie will be selected.

Just a months after receiving a standing ovation at the Ecrans Noirs Film Festival (18-25 June 2011) and nominated for the “Ecran d’Afrique Central – Charles Mensah Prize”, new movie OBSESSION by young and talented Cameroon Filmmaker, Achille Brice has just received 3 Nominations at the Zulu African Film Academy Awards (Zafaa Awards 2011)
