Aspiring Cameroonian hiphop artist T.A.G has given some music fans what they have long been waiting for: a remix of Jovi’s hit track “Don for kwat” . The remix is entitled “Mbom for kwat” and brings a new twist to the smash hit. It equallly reaffirms Jovi’s wide-appeal as an artist since only the best get remixed. This song comes at a time when some controversy has surfaced as to whether the “Don for kwat” track isn’t a remix of another song. Whatever the case, this song is a must listen and provides this up- and -coming artist some much- needed exposure.

The highly anticipated album ”LOTUS SP” by bona fide Hip Hop sensation MELCUBE has finally dropped. Rated as one of the best lyrically appealing Hip Hop album in Cameroon by some Hip Hop  pundits, Lotus SP is a must-listen album. Naija-based Cameroonian Afro-beat sensation Chinepoh a.k.a XCELENT(previously known as Excel) has broke the long silence with a terrific video of his new single ”Shaye”. The song , apparently an enthralling club-banger is currently being aired on radio across Cameroon and we are optimistic about its success . According his manager Emmanuel Cole‘s declaration on FACEBOOK, this video is worth 2.4 Million CFA frs. Xcelent has been rubbing shoulders with music heavyweights in Naija and recently performed during 2 Face Idibia‘s album launch at Eko Hotel, Lagos.

Visibly, there has recently been a dramatic improvement in the quality of Cameroonian urban music videos.  February 16th , Makconcept, NS pictures, etc keep setting the pace and the standard is just commendable.  ”SHAYE”  video was produced by Shamak of MAKCONCEPT.

Kora Awards laureate Bright Phase (Patly, Sylva and Beryl) just dropped a new M1 studio-produced-album titled ”Celebration”. The prolific trio signed by  Mamone Production has officially released the video of ”Ndolo”, a musically rich danceable piece extracted from the album. Remember Patly and Beryl recently wedded , so this can be a veritable confession of love . The video depicts a typical wedding setting with cameos like Alenne Menget, Sama Ndango ,Galaxy , Eka Christa , Manka and Clementine Mofor.  The video was directed by BlueDrops studios .

Steveslil a.k.a Panjo Master has been busy promoting his new single ”Panjo” and the embrace has been impressive! . After performing for Guinness promotion during the just ended University games , he has embarked on working on other songs that will feature in his repertoire. ”Ebangha” is one of the joints he’s been working on. Remixing is a derivative art-form, meaning music built from a recorded song either  by copying the hook, chorus or an element of the instrumental which appeals to you  . Remixing instrumentals have become a norm in contemporary urban music with the fluid evolvement of  heavily synthesized digital softwares . US artist Girl Talk is the most famous for creating an entire album using sounds from other music and cutting it to his own. Criticism and controversy on P-Square has been outrageous as a majority of their hit songs have been derivative forms of other recorded music or a mere sampling of western songs;,  Last night  ,Get squared , Game over,  ”Bizzy body’, Danger ,  ”Omoge mi”  , just to name a few are quintessences. Remixing and sampling is used by artists as an easy strategy or short-cut to garner quick attention and popularity. As this strategy worked like magic for P-Square  and  ” now the don di troway”, budding Cameroonian acts seem to have plunged into the same pool . Big Bzy remixed Akon’s ”Belly Dancer” , Steveslil remixed T-Pain’s ”Buy you a drank”  to ”Buy you shack” , King Aluan recently  remixed ”Chop ma money”  to  ” mange mon argent” , ”Don 4 kwat to ” Pa 4  kwat ” etc and criticism gets rave as pundits consider this a  non-creative  aspect or ”gate-scratching” on another’s success.  Are these all acts of plagiarism ? . On the other hand,  some artists remix or sample songs just to increase fidelity on the older song which may have degraded. Variety of reasons flourish.

Red Cafe

If you are keen enough, you can rightly say without fear of contradiction that Cameroonian mainstream song ”Don 4 kwat”  by JOVI is a derivative song from  US rapper and Konvict’s Red Cafe 2009 single ”Hottest in da hood” or Is it just a translation of title ?

Listening to the ”Don 4 kwat” instrumental, you get some musical components that are derived from ”Hottest in da hood”. ”Jovi simply added  spicy melody like the whistle and hit strings to make it different” someone told me yesterday. ”The rap style equally sounds similar” he continued . Can the assertion that no contemporary urban music is original be justified ?.
